MSSE Cybersecurity Elective 2016

I am offering a Cybersecurity elective for students registered in the University of Minnesota’s Master of Science in Software Engineering program. As I described in the class on Friday, the course uses the textbook I wrote and does a lot of lab work with security tools, including Wireshark, nmap, Gnu Privacy Guard, and vulnerability scanning.

Here is a link to the 2015 syllabus.

Can you recommend me a book for network security for beginners? I’m familar with programming languages like Java, Python and PHP but I don’t have any knowledge of networking.

Elementary Information Security contains a lot of introductory material on networking. But it’s a textbook so it can be pricey. It also depends on what you’re looking for. The textbook focuses more on technology and concepts than on specific recommendations.
